Ouigo vs Inoui: Which to Book
Ouigo departs from Paris suburbs (Marne-la-Vallée, Chessy, or Massy-Palaiseau) not central Paris stations - factor in 30–40 minutes of Métro or RER travel. Inoui departs from central Gare de Lyon or Montparnasse. For short trips, the central departure often makes Inoui better value once you price in the suburban transfer.
Seat Reservations Are Always Mandatory
All French TGV services require a reserved seat. If you hold an Interrail or Eurail pass, you still pay a reservation fee of €10–20 per journey. Book on sncf-connect.com - reservations open 90 days before departure and the cheapest "Prems" fares sell out fast.
Luggage Rules
SNCF allows two pieces of carry-on luggage (max 70 × 90 × 50 cm combined) plus one small personal item. There are no overhead lockers for large suitcases on some TGV sets - use the end-of-carriage luggage bays. Ouigo charges for checked bags booked at the station on the day.
Booking Windows
SNCF opens bookings 90 days in advance. The cheapest 'Prems' fares release first and are non-refundable. Set a calendar reminder for 90 days before your travel date. For summer travel (July–August) or school holidays, book the moment reservations open - popular routes sell out in hours.
Night Train from Paris
The Nightjet service from Paris Gare de l'Est is one of Europe's best sleeper experiences - private couchette cabins, Wi-Fi, and a mini-bar. Book 6-berth couchettes for budget travel or a private double cabin for couples. Days of operation and destinations vary by season, so check nightjet.com for your dates.
Paris Station Guide
Paris has 6 main terminus stations and they don't connect underground - allow 45–60 minutes to transfer between them by taxi or Métro. Key pairs: Gare du Nord ↔ Gare de l'Est (5 min walk), Gare de Lyon ↔ Bercy (10 min walk). Never assume you can make a 30-minute connection between different Paris stations.
