Britain's flagship intercity - London to Edinburgh
The restored Victorian Gothic terminus is both a national monument and the departure point for Eurostar services to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The international terminal occupies the upper level; East Midlands Railway and Thameslink serve the lower. The Champagne Bar on the Eurostar concourse is, arguably, the finest railway bar in Europe.

The 1852 terminus for LNER services to York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen on the East Coast Main Line. The spectacular semicircular roof of the Western Departure Hall (2012 renovation) is one of London's great modern engineering achievements. Also houses the Harry Potter Platform 9¾ photo wall - perennially busy but worth a quick look.

Edinburgh Waverley sits in the valley directly beneath Edinburgh Castle - one of the most dramatic station arrivals in Europe. The original 1854 station was buried in the Old Town ravine, invisible from the street above. Waverley Steps lead directly up to Princes Street, and the tram to Edinburgh Airport departs from nearby York Place.

Railcards: Save 34% on Almost Every Journey
UK Railcards give 34% off most Advance, Off-Peak, and Super Off-Peak fares. The 16-25 Railcard (£30/year) is the most popular - it also covers 26-30 year olds. The Two Together Railcard (£30/year) covers two named adults travelling together. The Senior Railcard (£30/year) is for over-60s. Each card typically pays for itself in 1–2 journeys.
Advance Fares: Book 84 Days Ahead
UK Advance fares are seat-specific and non-refundable, but they are typically 50–70% cheaper than Anytime fares. The cheapest Advance fares for popular routes (London–Edinburgh, London–Manchester) release at midnight exactly 84 days before departure. Set a calendar reminder. Once the cheapest quota sells out, the next tier is 20–30% more expensive.
Eurostar: Arrive Early and Travel Light
Eurostar security and passport control adds 30–45 minutes to check-in. Arrive at St Pancras at least 45 minutes before departure - 60 minutes for your first time. You clear UK Border Force outbound and French/Belgian immigration before boarding: your passport is checked twice. Liquids rules are the same as aviation (100ml, clear bag required).
Split Ticketing: A Legal Way to Pay Less
Splitting a UK journey into two or three separate tickets (buying London–Peterborough and Peterborough–Edinburgh separately, for example) often costs significantly less than a through ticket - even on the same train. Apps like Trainline and Split My Fare calculate this automatically. Always check that your train calls at the split point.
First Class on UK Trains: Worth the Premium?
LNER First Class includes complimentary meals and drinks on London–Edinburgh services - the full service competes with airlines at a fraction of the cost when booked in advance. First Class Advance fares can be as little as £50 more than Standard for a 4h 20m journey. Avanti West Coast (London–Manchester/Glasgow) and GWR (London–Bristol) also offer competitive First fares.
The East Coast Main Line: A Stunning Route
The London–Edinburgh East Coast Main Line passes some of Britain's finest landscapes and architecture: the dome of St Paul's Cathedral visible from the viaduct at Borough Market, the towers of York Minster between the platforms, Durham Cathedral on a cliff above the river, and the Forth Rail Bridge before Edinburgh. Book a window seat on the right side heading north.
