Como San Giovanni station is a compact Art Deco building (1927) that opens directly onto the Piazza San Gottardo, two minutes from the lakefront promenade. Turn right out of the station, walk five minutes south, and you reach the Lungo Lario Trento - the lakeside boulevard that frames the southern tip of the lake with views north toward the Alpine peaks that ring the water.
Lake Como (Lago di Lario in Italian, named for its ancient pre-Roman settlement) is 46 km long, has a maximum depth of 410 metres - the deepest lake in Italy - and has been a destination for the wealthy and the discerning since Roman times. Pliny the Younger had two villas here. The lake sits at 198 metres above sea level in a pre-Alpine glacial valley so perfectly formed that the microclimate supports palms, agaves, and lemon trees at the same latitude as Stuttgart.
From Como pier, the public ferry and hydrofoil services (operated by Navigazione Laghi) reach Bellagio - the point of the lake where the two arms divide - in 55 minutes by ferry or 30 minutes by hydrofoil.
