Madrid Atocha is unlike any other mainline station in Europe. Pass through the departures hall and you enter a 4,000-square-metre tropical garden - a lush indoor rainforest of palms, ferns and tortoises occupying the restored iron-and-glass structure of the original 1892 terminal. It was converted in 1992 by architect Rafael Moneo, and it remains one of the most extraordinary public spaces on the continent.

The AVE platforms are on the lower level - a clean, modern concourse of marble and tile. Ticket inspection happens at a barrier before the platforms; there is no aviation-style security, no baggage scan, no shoe removal. You pass your ticket, find your numbered seat, and wait the few minutes before departure. The trains leave exactly on time. Renfe regularly reports very high punctuality rates across the AVE network.

High-speed AVE trains provide spacious seating, large windows and generous luggage space. As the train moves north-east out of the city, the terracotta rooftops of Madrid drop away and the high plateau of central Spain opens up - vast, flat, and the colour of dried wheat.

Roughly 80 minutes from Madrid, the train decelerates into Zaragoza-Delicias - Spain's high-speed crossroads, where the Madrid–Barcelona line intersects routes north to Pamplona, Bilbao and San Sebastián. The station itself is a landmark of 21st-century Spanish architecture: a long, low structure clad in perforated aluminium panels that glow at dusk, designed for the 2008 World Expo hosted by the city.

Most Madrid–Barcelona services stop for two to three minutes - enough time to watch passengers board and alight, and to notice the dry heat of the Ebro Valley through the sealed windows. Zaragoza sits at the centre of Aragon, a region of Mudéjar towers, medieval fortifications, and some of the most arresting landscape in inland Spain.

Beyond Zaragoza the landscape begins its slow transformation. The dry ochre plain of La Mancha gives way to the greener valleys of Lleida, vineyards and fruit orchards appearing on the lower slopes. On very clear days, distant mountain ridges become visible to the north, and the light takes on the particular quality of the Catalan interior: brighter, more Mediterranean.

The train dips underground before Barcelona - a deliberate piece of urban planning that brings you into the city without the noise and visual clutter of an elevated line. Barcelona Sants is a deep, efficient station beneath the Eixample district: utilitarian by design, but perfectly connected. You're in the heart of the city before you've fully registered that the journey is over.

From Sants, the Metro L3 (green line) will have you on La Rambla in eight minutes. L5 connects to the Sagrada Família in ten. Taxis queue at the Carrer de Viriat exit. The Eixample's grid of modernist buildings begins the moment you surface - a dozen Gaudí buildings within walking distance, the Gothic Quarter twenty minutes on foot.

What the train delivers that no flight can is arrival without friction - no taxi from El Prat, no €6 Aerobus queue, no 45-minute transfer eating into your first afternoon. You board in central Madrid and disembark in central Barcelona, 2h 30m later, with the same bag you carried on and the same composure you left with.
